photojojo’s excellent guide to slow photography — in short, the art of taking time to make deliberate, beautiful and detailed images. as one of the generation schooled in the ethos of lomography, i need to pay attention to this.

an absolutely amazing bread recipe →
why so amazing? not only does it have a crisp crackly crust and taste amazing, but it’s a slow-rise bread. that means i can start it in the morning, go out to work, then come home and bake fresh bread to have with soup for dinner. nothing, i assure you, will make you feel as accomplished.
pretty new reads
at least, they’re new to me.

the shop at maison bertaux is the latest retail project from the fabulous pippa brooks and max karie. i’ve been a fan of pippa’s amazing style ever since i first went to shop on brewer street. the blog is a peek into the glamorous world of “madame” .. i want to be part of their gang ;-)
futebol: the brazilian way of life →
really, really excellent book by alex bellos. even if you don’t really like football, you’ll understand a lot more about brazil after you’ve finished this book.

just the best coffee in london. no argument. (although if time doesn’t permit us to get to borough market, union roasted is available at our local supermarket and is pretty damn delicious, too.)
there is nothing quite like being in the garden, so engrossed digging and chopping and planting that you don’t quite realise it’s getting dark and a light rain is falling. cold and dirty you head inside and jump into the shower which is so hot your skin tingles. then a beer and a plate of cold curry. now i’m warm as toast and about to play some viva piñata. just...
i don’t care about the time i run. i can try all i want, but i doubt i’ll ever be able to run the way i used to. i’m ready to accept that. it’s not one of your happier realities, but that’s what happens when you get older .. one of the privileges given to those who’ve avoided dying young is the blessed right to grow old. the honor of physical decline is...
i am the prickle on the back of your neck when you hear your favourite song. i am the smell of hot tarmac after rain and the cool fingers on your aching forehead. people stare sometimes, but they know that they can’t touch. i am not sheherezade, but some days i feel like my words will save my life.

"Football is amoral and that's why I like it" →
yes, every so often i will post about football, because i love it (not for its amorality, though). one of this country’s greatest writers on football is russell brand, the goth-haired leather-trouser-wearing comedian who just happens to be a west ham fan. he brings his trademark loony love of language to bear on the sport, and i just can’t get enough.

well, you know. style.com says it, so ..
a little bit about me
i’m sufficiently old-school that i think all blogs need to have an “about” page. it’s the first place i look. but that doesn’t mean i’m good at writing them.
i grew up in scotland, new zealand and brazil. i lived in london for over 10 years and am now back in wellington. i prefer to think of my accent as “mid-pacific”.
i am a journalist....
ceci n'est pas un blog
so, once upon a time i used to have a proper weblog. it started off as a way to post photos on the internet, back before the days of flickr and picasa and whathaveyou, occasionally with little bits of text. it was a way to keep in touch with my friends. and every so often i would write longer pieces. suddenly people who were not my friends started checking it out. i developed a bit of a...
ariel levy writes about marc jacobs! →
oh, i love ariel levy. she’s great. i lovelovelove the line about the area around his stores in bleecker street becoming like some kind of theme park — this is totally true. the gumball machines selling tiny marc jacobs merch. the magnolia bakery with its sex-and-the-city-tour-passengers queuing for cupcakes. it’s kind of hideous, but the very thought of it is...
juergen teller on fashion photography →
fascinating article about mr teller from the new york magazine style issue. he’s a photographer whose sometimes-grimy, sometimes-dreamy style i’ve always admired, but he’s a complex character, for sure ..
